🚨 What to consider when installing a beacon

Jan 15, 2025

Installing a beacon requires careful planning to ensure it performs reliably, safely, and effectively. Firstly, installation should always be carried out by qualified personnel. Beyond this, several additional factors should be considered, including application, orientation, mounting, voltage drop, and maintenance.

Application

Before selecting a beacon, consider the following:

  • Brightness: Is the beacon bright enough to be visible without being overpowering?
  • Colour: Does a specific standard require a particular colour for application?
  • IP Rating: Where will the beacon be used, and what level of environmental protection is needed?
  • Power Consumption: Does the available power supply meet the beacon’s requirements?
  • Mode: Should the beacon flash, rotate, or be static?
  • Differentiation: Is it different from other nearby beacons to ensure the end-user can distinguish its meaning?
  • Sighting: Consider the viewing angles and potential obstructions to maximise visibility

Orientation and Mounting

Beacons are typically installed vertically , particularly for continuous use, with the dome on top. Improper mounting can affect the IP rating – in the case of sounders, the horn must never point upwards.

To facilitate correct mounting, a variety of L-shaped brackets and poles are available to help facilitate optimal orientation.

Voltage Drop and Electrical Consideration

Installers should also account for potential voltage drop, which can affect beacon performance. Long cable runs, especially those containing high currents, can reduce voltage at the beacon. Keep cable runs as short as possible, and calculate voltage drop using Ohm’s Law to ensure sufficient power reaches the beacon.

Maintenance

Ensure the beacon is installed in a location that allows easy access for inspection and servicing. Choose low-maintenance options such as LED beacons where possible. For other types, preventative maintenance (like replacing xenon flash tubes before failure) can prevent damage to the circuit and prolong the life of the device.
