The IP rating system (Ingress Protection rating system) is a scale of how waterproof and airtight an electrical enclosure is, as determined by the international standard IEC/EN 60529.
Using the IP rating system gives a clear and concise guide to ensure that an item is suitable for the environment it will be installed in.
Each IP rating is made up of 2 numbers:
The first number advises its protection from solid objects, ranging from body parts such as your hand to dust. For example, if you were to install an electrical product in a dusty environment like a beach hut, you would need the first number to be at least 5 or 6 to protect the products electrical circuit from being damaged by the dust ingress.
The second number advises its protection from liquids, ranging from dripping water to complete submersion. For example, if you were installing an electrical product in a marine area, you would need the second number to be at least 7 or 8.

Using this table, we can see a unit that is IP65 rated is:
IP 6 dust tight and 5 protected against water jets.
The IP rating system is a widely used and extremely helpful tool when choosing any electrical product.
